stage coaches with room
enough for about 8 passen-
-gers in each apartment,
the mail car has a large
net attached to the side
evidently used to catch
the mail while on the
fly. The cars are all supplied
with the Westinghouse air
break. It is now time
to start. The Guard is
blowing his whistle and
with a jerk the stage
coaches commence to move.
After leaving Liverpool we pass
through several long tunnels
all cut out of solid rock, in
a short time we leave Liverpool
behind and as we emerge into
the open country we get a view
of the English farm houses
the farms being well fenced
with hedges of hawthorn.
One of my fellow passengers in
the train is an American sailor
whom I recognize by the name
on his cap and I was not long getting
into conversation with him and
we passed the time very pleasantly.
The train having reached Crewe
I now change cars leaving my
American friend to continue his
journey to London.
After changing cars at Crewe
I next take a train to Etruria
and from thence to Hanley
my destination Arriving there
at 2.30 PM. My friends
were very much surprised to
seem for I took them by suprise
not letting them know I was
coming. As I have reached
my journey’s end and have
business to attend to that will
