&c. at last we see two skyrockets
fly from our vessel’s deck as a
signal for the small tender
to come along side to receive
the Mails and a few passengers
The Tender has observed our
signals for she is already appro-
aching us, so after reversing
the engines we at last come
to a stop as the bell is ringing
3. AM (Jan 10th) therefore
making the trip from New
York in 8 Days 17 hours, And we
also learn that the Steamer
City of Chicago who passed us
soon after leaving New York
has not yet arrived.
After taking all the Mail which
consisted of 641 bags on board
the tender and also some
half dozen passengers we now
swing around and leave Queen-
-stown making the stop of half an
hour, The moon is shining as
bright as silver and the water
is as smooth as glass but we are
unable to see any of the surroun-
-ding scenery except the dark rocky
coast, The town is also hid from
view the only things visable
being the lighthouse near a
narrow channel which evidently
is an opening to a bay beyond.
.8. AM
We are now in the Irish
channel the sun is rising and
we can distinctly see the eastern
coast of Ireland dotted with
lighthouses. and as the morning
advances we have a very clear
view and can distinguish
the small towns along the
coast, The sea is very smooth
scarcely a ripple in its surface
