miles up to noon today
the full distance being
3003 miles, which leaves
a balance of 1363 miles
yet to be traveled.
We are making very fair
time considering the strong
head wind. the last 24 hours
we have averaged 14 knots
and hour which in geogra-
phical miles figures 16 96/100
miles per hour.
.6 P.M.
The gale has abated
and the wind is moving
round to the North and
we hope by morning to
have a wind that will
be of some good to us
instead of a hindrance.
Jan 7th.
The wind has shifted
to the North East and we
are carring Fore and Main
Topsails, the sea is not so
rough, so we are able to
go on deck the greater part
of the day, it is very cold
in the wind but by
sheltering behind the
cabin and hatchway
we can keep warm a little
for the sun is shining
which makes it more
cheerful. This is the
seventh day out and we
have not seen a sail
since we lost sight of
the City of Chicago,
Seagulls are plentiful
as usual and to day
we saw a few porpoises
and at 1. PM we saw a
rainbow in the East.
