part of the railing they
all stand aside ready to
lift the Bier when the word
is given. Some few passengers
stand around the Doctor
who is reading the burial
service from the Engilsh
Prayer book. it is a very
solemn sight not a
friend to shed a tear or
even place one more
flower on the coffin.
instead, it is more a
group of curiosity seekers,
but they all uncover their
heads as a mark of respect,
at last the moment arrives
for the sailors to lift the
Bier, The man at the
wheel receives orders to
port (left) his helm, and with
a little rough handling
one end of the board is
rested on the rail and as
the Doctor reads the Passage
; Commit his body to the
deep; the end of the flag
is drawn back and the
body is allowed to slide
from the board feet first ;
and with a splash the
poor fellow disappeared
beneath the wave which
closes over him as with
triumph at gaining one
more victum; Oh what a
sight ; The sailors have gone
to attend to their regular
duty, the passengers have
all disappeared, and the
ship is now a mile or
more away from the grave;
And an anxious wife and
children anxiously awaiting
