he had been drinking very
hard and a friend of his
stated that he had not
been sober for 8 days and
the consequence was he
was not able to under go
the seasickness. But let
him rest poor fellow he
has gone and let us hope
that his example of folly
will be the means of saving
some other young man
from taking the same
course.
8. PM. The death on
board has had a sobering effect
on the passengers for the
usual singing and enjoyment
has been dispensed with, and
those that have no reading
matter to pass the time
have retired for the night.
Jan 5th.
It is still raining and blowing
quite a gale from the North
East and it is very cold on
deck. 7.30 AM.
We have just received word
that the burial of the young
man who died yesterday is
just about to take place on
deck. so hurrying abaft the
Pilot house we arrive just in
time, as the service is about
to commence, the body is in
a shroued shroud of canvass
tightly sewn around the
body with a weight placed
at the feet and lying on a
board, the whole, being covered
by the ship’s flag for a
fall, the scene is very sad,
the sailors having removed
