Jan 1st 1887
This is the first day of the
new year and may it bring
health, happiness and
Prosperity to all.
I was awakened in the night
by all the steamboats in the
harbor hailing the new year
with a chorus of blasts from
their steam whistles such
a din I never heard before
all the boats along the warfe
joined in the Chorus.
Breakfest being over it is
now time to be aboard the
Steamer Which is to leave
the dock at 9.30 AM, it is
very miserable walking all
the streets being wet and
slushy but it has stopped
raining.
10 A.M. All aboard safe
the steamer is late in leav-
-ing, it now being half an
hour behind time, after a great
deal of whistling and ringing
of bells the steamer slowly
backs out into the stream.
The docks are crowded with
visitors anxiously bidding
their friends good bye and
many can be seen wiping
away a tear or giving the
last kiss, Amoungst the
ladies the scene is very
affecting and although a cold
miserable rain is falling
many an anxcious Mother
or Father with silvery hair
reach forward to get one
more glimpse of a parting
sone or daughter that perhaps
they may never see again.
