not leave until the 5th Jan so I started towards the Company’s office in Battery Place and on my way I ascertained that the S.S. – Gallia of the Cunard Line left on the 1st So I continued my journey to the Company’s office and asked what they intended to do (for it must be remembered the company were responsible for my board after the date of sailing) whether they would pay my board or send me out on anot- her Steamer, at the same time mentioning the Gallia. The Company at last after a great deal of growling on their part decided to send me out on the Gallia. |
So securing a hotel near
the dock I now the 42nd St Depot for my baggage, after completing arragement for its delivery at the warfe I now return to my Hotel and write home notifying them of the change in the program- me. After Writing my letter I took a walk to the Post Office my object being to see the city and Brooklyn Bridge at the same time give my letter a better chance of catching the first Mail West. After Supper I retired early that I may get sleep before going aboard and also make up for the sleep I had lost while on the cars. |
