of the same company did
not leave until the 5th Jan
so I started towards the
Company’s office in Battery
Place and on my way I
ascertained that the S.S. –
Gallia of the Cunard Line
left on the 1st So I continued
my journey to the Company’s
office and asked what they
intended to do (for it must
be remembered the company
were responsible for my board
after the date of sailing)
whether they would pay my
board or send me out on anot-
her Steamer, at the same time
mentioning the Gallia. The
Company at last after a great
deal of growling on their
part decided to send me
out on the Gallia.
So securing a hotel near
the dock I now starttake Elevated Rd for
the 42nd St Depot for my
baggage, after completing
arragement for its delivery
at the warfe I now return
to my Hotel and write
home notifying them of
the change in the program-
me. After Writing my letter
I took a walk to the Post
Office my object being to see
the city and Brooklyn
Bridge at the same time
give my letter a better
chance of catching the
first Mail West. After
Supper I retired early that
I may get sleep before going
aboard and also make up
for the sleep I had lost
while on the cars.
