and winding their course
amoung the beautiful
fields below towards the famous
River Hudson, then we have
the rolling hills some towering
a thousand feet high over–
looking the river and gradu-
ally dying away in the blue ridges
far in the distance, with the
West Shore Rail Road twining
around the foot of the hills
by the waters edge.
The water scenery is almost
as varied as the landscape, in
places we see Islands obstruct-
ing the stream here and there
a lighthouse towers above some
treacherous reef. Some of the
Islands are rugged with
but a few shrubs to break
the monotony, there are others
that are beautifully fitted
out for summer resorts. Hotels
and dancing pavilions being in
abundance, occasionally a
beautiful little bay will break
in view from behind some
steep cliff forming a natural
shelter for the boats from the
storms coming up the river from
the sea. At this season of
the year the boats are all made
secure at their mooring and
the river is partically frozen
over the channel being kept
open by the large steamers,
occasionally we see iceboats
on the frozen river, but
at this early hour they are
all moored. As we speed
a’long on our journey we pass
the famous St. Antoiny’s Nose,
the Highlands, Palisades,
and West Point Academy
